TUESDAY, AUGUST 9: Educator Change Maker Circle
Co-Creating Liberated Education
A Full Day Professional Development Retreat in Nature for People Working in Communication, Outreach & Organizational Development
Join us to explore communication unlearning and shifting narratives for transformative justice. We will delve into interpersonal communication practices of deep listening, witnessing, story telling, relationship building, inclusive language, emotional agility, and generating narratives that embrace the whole self and different lived experiences. We will work with embodied practices, creative dialogue, and shared learning principles to unlearn, relearn, and cultivate communication norms that support co-creating anti-racist culture centered in humanity, equity, and belonging for collective liberation.
This retreat is for communication, outreach, development professionals and people responsible for organizational communication and is open to all identities.
- Deepen awareness of our own interpersonal communication norms, how they can cause harm, and how we can hold ourselves responsible with grace.
- Embody the wholeness of communication to inform organizational group process, messaging, and outreach.
- Facilitate a vulnerable unlearning and shared learning space that holds space for acknowledging racialized and subjugated trauma with empathy and support from the Earth.
Too often organizational communication begins with external facing communication of strategic plans, value propositions, and culture statements without addressing the internal shifts of how interpersonal communication and emotional agility directly inform group process, project management, and communication norms that are steeped in white dominance and paternalistic power structures.
The Equity & Belonging in Interpersonal & Organizational Communication Retreat will disrupt assumptions, create the space for reflection, and build capacity towards emergence into new ways of approaching communication that are equitable, inclusive, and just for internal and external audiences of an organization.
Flow of the Day
Facilitated with the elements of nature, the day will mostly be comprised of being in circle together with a mix of prepared content and space to allow the conversations to inform the dialogue flow. Depending on numbers and identities, we may break into smaller groups and hold affinity space. Embodiment practices and somatic experiences will support connection and integration with the body to support unlearning and the emotional charge of equity work. There will also be space for solo reflection and grounding in nature.
EmpowR co-creators will hold courageous, vulnerable, and empathetic space for our time together. Ornella Matta-Figueroa is a trauma informed wellness practitioner, disruptor, visionary, and co-director of SafeArt, Inc. Rae Carter is a dialogue facilitator, communication and healing navigator, culture builder, and anti-racism educator.
Please bring your own lunch. You are welcome to bring food to share on the communal offering table. If this feels stressful for you, please just bring what you need. Snacks will also be provided throughout the day and you are invited to share snacks if you feel called.
Mineral rich mountain water and herbal tea brewed from plants stewarded at the sanctuary will be available throughout the day.
We do not want lack of child care to be a reason why someone cannot attend this retreat. If this applies to you, please fill out this form to let us know your childcare needs so we can try to provide accommodation at the retreat so you may attend.
We will gather outside, on the Earth, under the trees at the beautiful Grandmother Cherry Sanctuary in Plainfield, Vermont. Chairs and rain coverings will be provided. Please bring what you need to be comfortable (mat, blanket, pillow, clothing). This is a nature-based event and we will be outside all day. There is a friendly dog and cats on the premise who may participate at times.
Directions and more details of how to prepare will be provided upon registration.
