Rae began growing plants and herbs as a 6-year old Girl Scout and has been crafting potions and medicines since then. Some of the plant allies grown at the Sanctuary have been in relationship with Rae for over 20 years. When diagnosed with cancer in 2018, Rae began living a healing path and transitioned her vegetable garden into a medicinal plant garden to grow the foods and medicine (and food as medicine) to support her healing. Rae and ki‘s partner, Mitch Pauley, turned their home into an herbal apothecary and the land into a forest healing sanctuary for collective healing.

Hygge Den Studio Apartment Rental on Airbnb
As Grandmother Cherry Sanctuary blossomed, Rae and Mitch began the work to finish the original “mother-in-law” apartment in the basement as a respite rental space for people to visit and retreat. The Hygge Den studio apartment is named after the Hygge Den music collective which shares the same space and is a music project Rae and Mitch have been slowly trying to bring to fruition (seeking a guitar and keyboard player to complete the foundation – message if interested).
Honoring their Norse ancestry, “hygge” is a word from Danish and Norwegian culture that describes the warm, cozy vibes of being tucked into the blessings of light when surrounded by dark. This is an energy that is foundational into all aspects of EmpowR and the way Rae and Mitch live their lives and is very fitting for the underground “den” that is home to both a music studio and cozy Airbnb getaway. The apartment is also connected to home and apothecary functionality and storage and is not suitable or zoned for guests beyond a short term rental. It’s ideal for a campy, private, restorative, and magical getaway…with special perks for musicians.
